Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, Pitcher’s Shoulder: Sports Injuries We Know (and Fix) Well

Whether you're swinging a racket, gripping a club, or throwing heat on the mound, repetitive motion can lead to serious joint strain. At California Sports & Spine Institute (CSSI), we specialize in treating these common overuse injuries—without surgery. From the elbow to the shoulder, we help active individuals get out of pain and back to the sports they love.

Let’s take a closer look at these injuries, their symptoms, and how we help you heal.

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Despite the name, tennis elbow doesn’t only affect tennis players. It results from repetitive motion that irritates the tendons in your forearm—often from activities like weightlifting, typing, or even yard work.

Common symptoms include:

Pain or burning on the outside of the elbow

Weakened grip strength

Discomfort that worsens with lifting, gripping, or twisting motions

Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Similar to tennis elbow but affecting the inner elbow, golfer’s elbow results from overuse of the forearm muscles that flex the wrist and fingers. It's common among golfers, but also in people who do frequent lifting or manual labor.

Symptoms to watch for:

Pain and stiffness on the inner side of the elbow

Tingling or numbness in the ring and pinky fingers

Weak grip or difficulty making a fist

Pitcher’s Shoulder (Rotator Cuff Tendinitis or Impingement)

Also known as thrower’s shoulder, this condition affects the rotator cuff—the group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. Repetitive overhead motion (throwing, swimming, or even certain gym exercises) can lead to inflammation or tears.

Symptoms may include:

Dull ache deep in the shoulder

Pain when lifting, reaching, or rotating the arm

Weakness or limited range of motion

How We Treat These Injuries at CSSI

At CSSI, we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between living in pain and undergoing surgery. Our non-surgical, regenerative, and functional approach targets both the symptoms and the root cause.

Advanced Diagnostic Testing

We use ultrasound, MRI, and functional movement analysis to pinpoint the source of your pain and design a personalized treatment plan.

Regenerative Medicine

We offer innovative, minimally invasive treatments like:

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Stem Cell Therapies (BMAC, amniotic)

These therapies accelerate natural healing, repair soft tissue damage, and help delay or even avoid surgery.

Therapeutic Injections

When needed, we offer targeted relief through:

Corticosteroid injections

Trigger point therapy

Nerve blocks

These can reduce inflammation and help manage pain quickly.

Functional Rehab & Injury Prevention

After treatment, we guide you through a customized rehab plan to rebuild strength, restore mobility, and prevent reinjury—getting you back to peak performance.

Back to the Game—Stronger Than Ever

Overuse injuries like tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and pitcher’s shoulder can be frustrating—but you don’t have to live with the pain. At California Sports & Spine Institute, our goal is to help you heal smarter and get back to the active lifestyle you love.
